Relational Contracting: The Ethics of Building Clear Contracts in Therapy and Business

Relational Contracting: The Ethics of Building Clear Contracts in Therapy and Business

Presented by Dr. Wendy Palmer Patterson, PhD and Bob Patterson, MEd.

Our expertise as Imago therapists and facilitators, can be applied to both a therapeutic and business setting, and should be done with ethical considerations of good and conscious contracting. Establishing clear, purposeful, and respectful contracts with our clients is an essential component of our work in both settings. Without a clear contract, we may find ourselves in situations that put both our clients and our business at risk.

In this workshop, we will explore the ethical considerations of establishing contracts that attempt to solve problems before they get too big, clarify our clients expectations, expand the picture of possibilities, and provide a map of what lies ahead.

Articulating clear and inviting contracts is not typically covered in our trainings of therapists and facilitators.  This course is a leap forward in making better agreements and invitations, as well as understanding the different communications needed in a therapeutic session versus a business opportunity.  Making ethical contracts diminishes conflict, lowers stress, and communicates respect for ourselves and our clients.

Participants will:

  • Identify potential ethical conflicts that may arise in creating a contract with a client vs. a business and apply Imago Relationship Theory practices to co-create a solution to any conflicts of interest.

  • Integrate the ethical values of Imago Relationship Theory by clarifying the contracting process with clients in therapy and business settings with the specific focus of avoiding harm.

  • Prepare an actionable contract for clients incorporating ethical standards including informed consent, prevention of discrimination, confidentiality, and outlining procedures for possible role changes in your professional interactions in therapeutic vs. business situations.
